Elder abuse must continue to be publicized and prosecuted.
Criminals who prey on vulnerable seniors should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Further, we must continue to educate seniors and their children about a wide range of scams that target vulnerable elderly.
Seniors should continue to have opportunities for residential property tax exemptions.
I will fight aggressively to protect tax exemptions for qualifying senior citizen homeowners. Many seniors on fixed incomes do not have the flexiblility to absorb taxes for bonds and other worthy projects. By protecting the right to exemptions, local government agencies will have a better chance to pass necessary ballot measures while not passing on unreasonable financial burdens to our retired neighbors.
California must invest in quality senior housing options.
Too many senior citizens choose to maintain their too-large residences because they have no reasonable options to downsize to quality senior housing. Our state government must partner with local municipalities and the development community to build more subsidized senior housing units. When seniors have reasonable options to downsize, our communities will free up more houses for young families.
